Tuve el mismo problema (y muchos más) al hacer que el tema earth-sunrise de 2011 funcione bajo Ubuntu 16.04.
Cambiar los nombres de ruta del formato <16.04 a 16.04
El archivo /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.plymouthtenía rutas antiguas de Ubuntu 14.04 y tuvo que cambiarse para reflejar Ubuntu 16.04.
Asegúrese de que el suyo contenga nombres de ruta como este:

Transición suave a GDM
Para habilitar la transición sin problemas, debe deshabilitar su unidad de administración de pantalla, por ejemplo
systemctl disable gdm.service
Habilite la unidad DM-plymouth respectiva (se proporcionan unidades GDM, LXDM, SLiM), p. Ej.
systemctl enable gdm-plymouth.service
Activar depuración
Edite el archivo /etc/default/gruby busque la línea LINUX_DEFAULT:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vt.handoff=7 kaslr"
y cámbialo a esto:

La nota plymouth:debuges lo importante. También splashsiempre se requiere invocar a Plymouth.
