Error de configuración del servidor Xorg: no se detectaron pantallas

Tengo un problema grave con el servidor Xorg en ubuntu 12.04 (con la tarjeta nvidia 420M GT).

En casa estoy usando un monitor externo conectado al puerto HDMI de mi computadora portátil; la pantalla externa se usa como extendida. Pero luego, cuando salgo de mi casa y voy, por ejemplo, al trabajo, ya no lo uso, pero el archivo de configuración de mi xorg permanece como estaba y luego suceden algunas cosas malas. Por ejemplo, cada vez que inicio después de desconectar el monitor externo obtengo una fuente no predeterminada y más grande de lo habitual + algunas ventanas con errores sobre modos de resolución no compatibles.

Pero hoy he intentado arrancar normalmente sin el monitor adicional y el servidor xorg ha fallado y no puedo arrancar en la GUI. Estoy recibiendo esto

También recibí el error de que se detectaron pantallas, pero ninguna de ellas tiene un archivo de configuración adecuado, pero luego intenté restablecer xorg a sus valores predeterminados (en modo a prueba de fallas) con

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

(No obtuve ningún resultado de eso) y ahora estoy atascado con esto. Para ser honesto, tengo este error al intentar iniciar sesión en failsafemodo y obtener la imagen de inicio de ubuntu cuando intento arrancar normalmente.

OK, así que reinstalé el xserver-xorgcon apt-gety luego eliminé el ~/.config/monitors.xmlarchivo y todo funciona bien ahora. :)
