Intente instalar php-mbstring para la configuración de mediawiki.

@TiloBunt ¿En qué fuentes tienes /etc/apt/sources.list? Y la misma pregunta para las fuentes en /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*. Esas son las fuentes de donde obtiene todos sus paquetes. Así que asegúrese de que todo se vea bien. Obtenga el repositorio del paquete que desea instalar y verifique si tiene su fuente dentro de las listas mencionadas.

Te faltan algunos canales necesarios de sources.list. Haz sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.listy haz que se vea así:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic main multiverse restricted universe
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-security main multiverse restricted universe
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates main multiverse restricted universe

Guardar y Salir. Luego actualice su repositorio:

sudo apt update

Luego instale php-mbstring:

sudo apt install php7.2-mbstring

Estos comandos no me han funcionado. El error es el mismo. Tuve que descargarlo http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/p/php7.2/php7.2-mbstring_7.2.15-0ubuntu0.18.04.1_amd64.debe instalarlo por dpkg -icomando

La información de su paquete que aptconoce está desactualizada.

Usando la rmadisonherramienta, podemos ver todas las versiones de php7.2-mbstringen los repositorios:

 php7.2-mbstring | 7.2.3-1ubuntu1         | bionic/universe          | amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, ppc64el, s390x

 php7.2-mbstring | 7.2.7-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 | bionic-updates/universe  | amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, ppc64el, s390x

aunque solo estoy mostrando los artículos Bionic aquí.

Debido a que su sistema no sabe acerca de los más recientes php7.2-mbstringen los repositorios de seguridad o actualizaciones, está obteniendo una discrepancia de versión.

Ejecuta esto:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install php7.2-mbstring

Esto debería ayudar a que sus versiones vuelvan a donde deben estar. (Tenga en cuenta que es posible que desee usar en dist-upgradelugar de upgradepara que los paquetes como los paquetes de kernel actualizados se instalen y actualicen también)

Parece que su sistema no está configurado correctamente entonces. Muéstranos el apt-cache policyresultado del mismo comando que pregunté en los comentarios como una edición de tu pregunta nuevamente, porque parece que tus repositorios no se están actualizando

aprecio tu ayuda. La adición de la restrictedsolucionó por ahora y estoy bien. El sistema era una nueva instalación en VM, así que no estoy seguro de cómo puedo estropear la configuración tan rápido pero podría haber sido. Saludos
