Ubuntu no reconoce el disco duro externo

Tengo un disco duro externo externo Wester de 2TB. Lo conecté al puerto USB 3.0 de mi computadora portátil con Ubuntu 14.04 (64 bit) instalado. Funcionó bien hasta ayer (no lo he probado en ningún otro sistema operativo). Al mover algunos archivos, se congeló mi sistema operativo y tengo que reiniciar mi computadora portátil. Desde entonces, nautilus no muestra el disco duro.
Probé varias soluciones proporcionadas en SU, así como otros foros sin resultado. Sin embargo, una vez se detectó a través del puerto 2.0, pero casi todos los directorios estaban vacíos, pero el espacio esperado todavía está ocupado. Luego reinicié en Windows para ejecutar chkdsck pero mi computadora no lo mostró. Aunque el Administrador de discos lo muestra, pero dice "El disco debe inicializarse". Si intenté hacer lo mismo, sale con el mensaje "Error de dispositivo de E / S".dmesg también dice algo sobre el error de E / S y el error del gabinete. El disco y el cable están en excelentes condiciones (lo compré hace solo 12 días).
Todavía se muestra en lsusb y discos, pero no en gparted y fdisk -l, solo muestra el disco duro interno.
Por favor, ayuda ya que el disco contiene datos cruciales que no puedo permitirme perder.

Si ayuda, VLC Player también dio errores de E / S en el pasado al reproducir algunos archivos directamente desde el disco duro externo.
Cualquier ayuda es muy apreciada.

¿Cuál es el modelo exacto de la unidad? ¿Escuchas algún sonido anormal? Probaría la unidad en un sistema Windows y vería si se detecta en el BIOS, el Administrador de dispositivos o la Administración de discos y cómo (las capturas de pantalla serían útiles).

También intentaría ejecutar la herramienta de diagnóstico WD Data Lifeguard y ver si reconoce la unidad. Si lo hace, vería si la unidad pasa las pruebas rápidas y extendidas.
